What is Art?

by | Sep 1, 2022

We are first exposed to art when we are given those first few crayons as children. We grasped it as tight as we possibly could and instinctively started to draw on the paper in front of us. We expressed ourselves with the choice of colour and scribbles. Slowly learning as we watched other people draw dogs and cars for us to colour in.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
PABLO PICASSO

As we grow, we either lose interest in art or we stay involved by doodling or practicing. Those of us that have stayed involved even if it is only to admire others artwork have some underlying idea that art is subjective, even though the artist may intend one thing with their concept, the audience may view it differently. The average person when they think of art may think of only drawing and painting. They may only have a very limited knowledge of what art may be. Art is drawing and painting, but it is also sculpture, ceramics, stained glass, design, printmaking, photography, performance, poetry, film making and music. These are only the broad terms used. Within each type of art there are so many different modes and materials that can be used to create each of these types.
